Pistols
We always start with pistol rounds in CS2. Let’s follow the tradition, shall we? Not all pistol names and their meanings in CS2 have interesting stories and origins. In straightforward cases, we won’t make anything up; we’ll just tell it like it is. So, here’s what pistol names in CS2 mean:
- Glock-18: Glock is an Austrian firearms manufacturer. Glock-17 was their first widely known model. Glock-18 is a modification, an upgraded and better version of Glock-17 that allows for select-fire mode.
- USP-S: The S stands for Suppressor. USP means Universelle Selbstladepistole or universal self-loading pistol in German. It’s a German pistol produced by Heckler & Koch.
- P2000: In this case, P likely stands for Pistol (also manufactured by Heckler & Koch), and 2000 probably refers to the year it was created, yet only the release happened in 2001.
- P250: P may stand for Pistol or Parabellum. We don’t know the exact meaning, but it’s most likely not that trivial.
- Tec-9: “Tec” is short for “Intratec,” the manufacturer.
- CZ75-Auto: CZ is not only an abbreviation for the Czech Republic but also the first two letters of the Czech armament clothing and tools manufacturer, ČZUB.
- Five-seveN: This pistol is named after its calibre, 5.7x28mm, and FN stands for Fabrique Nationale (Herstal), a French firearms manufacturer.
- Desert Eagle: It’s a Magnum all along. A big and scary one-shot pistol that goes BOOM. Who else but Magnum? This pistol is made by an American company, and Americans love eagles. Funnily enough, this gun is positioned as a hunting/protection weapon against wild animals.
- Dual Berettas: Two pistols from the Italian company Beretta. It’s that simple.
Shotguns
Let’s continue our breakdown with names of shotguns in CS2 and what do they mean.
- Sawed-Off: The name speaks for itself.
- XM1014: TL;DR, it’s a shotgun by Benelli named M1014. The X at the beginning means that it’s a prototype, and after this model went into production, they cut it.
- MAG-7 and Nova: No hidden meanings here, as the makers simply named these models this way. MAG stands for Magazine, because you use one with this shotgun. And Nova is a star in Italian.
Submachine Guns
Perhaps the most boring category. What’s MAC and UMP? Why PP Bizon? Learn here:
- MP5, MP7, MP9: MP stands for Maschinenpistole, which means submachine gun in German.
- MAC-10: MAC is short for Military Armament Corporation, a company that went bankrupt in 1975 and no longer exists.
- UMP-45: 45 refers to the weapon’s calibre, and UMP stands for Universal Machine Pistol.
- PP-19 Bizon: PP stands for submachine gun translated from russian, and Bizon (bison) is just the name.
Assault Rifles
Here, we have both straightforward examples and original names. Why AK has 47 in the name? Who’s Galil? See below.
- AK-47: We’re gonna be obvious here: AK is for Avtomat Kalashnikova, 47 means the first presentation. Don’t get tricked: AK-47 is not an AK released/produced in 1947, it’s just the year of presentation. AK-47 served well until 1974 (and honestly, some of them still do almost 100 years later).
- AUG: AUG is German for Army Universal Rifle (Armee-Universal-Gewehr).
- FAMAS: This stands for Fusil d’Assaut de la Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne, which translates to Assault Rifle from the Saint-Étienne Arms Factory.
- Galil: AR means Assualt Rifle, but overall it’s named after the designer of the weapon, Yisrael Galili.
- M4: Here, it’s just the name made in accordance with American standards (which is why the Benelli shotgun is called M1014). A1-S means a specific model + suppressor; M4 stands for a specific newer model.
- SG 553: SG stands for Assault Rifle in German (Sturmgewehr).
Sniper Rifles
What does AWP mean in CS2? Let’s learn.
- SSG 08: This weapon is known as Scharfschützengewehr 2008, which translates to Sharpshooter Rifle and was first released in 2008.
- AWP: Accuracy International of the United Kingdom, a weapons concern in the UK, has created the Accuracy International Warfare series, which includes a number of weapons. The name AWP is associated with the Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Rifle, and Valve decided to change it a little and make it Arctic Warfare Police, referencing to the entire series of weapons.
- G3SG1: G means Gewehr (rifle, firearm), and as we already know from the example of SSG 08, SG means a Sharpshooter Rifle.
- SCAR-20: SCAR is an abbreviation for Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle.
Machine Guns
Two machine guns, two descriptions.
- Negev: Negev is a desert in the Middle East located in Israel.
- M249: There is no particular significance here. Considering that the machine gun is American, it can be assumed that the name is standardized.
So, you can see that most of the weapon names in Counter-Strike 2 are not particularly original. Fortunately, in Counter-Strike 2, you can come up with your own name that’s fresh and unique using a nametag. And if you use a non-default skin, your individuality will shine even more.
