CS2 Player Count Record in 2025
Last year started strong for CS2, with player activity going up fast. In February, the game hit an all-time peak: 1.8 million players were searching for a match at the same time, most likely on Mirage or Dust 2. Even though player numbers dropped by almost 15% by the end of the year, 2025 can still be called a record year for total hours played.
When talking about player numbers, the average online count also matters. For almost the whole year, it stayed above one million players, with the usual dip during summer. Counter-Strike has never been this popular before.

Compared to the player record, the next one might sound strange. By market rules, more buyers usually mean higher prices — simple supply and demand. But despite record-breaking player numbers, 2025 became the year of a major skin market crash. Not just one, but three of them:
- The first happened in early May, when the market dropped from 5 billion to 4.5 billion dollars in total value. It was more like a quick jump and fall, nothing too serious.
- The second crash came after an update that removed trading. The drop was slightly bigger, from 5.2 to 4.5 billion dollars. Still, traders quickly accepted the new rules, and the market pushed forward to nearly 6 billion again.
- The third and biggest crash happened after changes to trade-up contracts. As soon as players got the ability to craft knives, the market fell hard. The total value dropped from 6 billion to 3.5 billion dollars. Panic spread fast, and many predicted the death of the skin economy. But by the end of the year, the market cap was once again climbing toward 6 billion.
The first two events were not big enough to be called true records, but the third one was a real turning point in skin trading history. Owners of red-tier weapons woke up to inventories that were worth 6–9 times more, while knife and glove owners saw their valuable items lose 30–40% of their price in just a few hours.
How Many Cases Were Opened in 2025? Is It a New Record?
While traders were stressing out, regular players were doing what they always do: opening cases. The year 2025 can be called a record year, but with some reservations. So how many cases were opened in CS2 in 2025? According to different estimates, players opened around 400 million cases.
That is a massive number, but is it really a record? Valve does not publish official case statistics, and based on public data, the community has reached around 400 million opened cases for the third year in a row. Maybe 2025 had a few million more openings than previous years, or maybe not. Still, we’ll stay optimistic and count it as another record for 2025.

The Austin Major became the most-watched tournament by total hours viewed. According to Escharts, viewers watched a huge 76 million hours of matches during the event. However, the record for peak viewers still belongs to PGL Major Stockholm 2021, with almost 3 million people watching at the same time. No tournament in 2025 even came close to that number.
Most Prize Money: Dan “apEX” Madesclaire
The Vitality IGL broke two records at once. First, he became the highest-earning player in Counter-Strike history. His total prize money now exceeds 2.3 million dollars. Second, he became the oldest Major winner ever. On the day Vitality won StarLadder Budapest Major 2025, Madesclaire was 32 years and 121 days old. So if you are not 32 yet, you still have time to reach a Valve Major final. Probably.
Best Player and Best at Majors: Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut
Another Vitality player was also breaking records. In 2025, Mathieu Herbaut became the Major MVP twice. That gives him a total of three MVP awards at Valve tournaments. That’s more than anyone else! Over his career, he has collected 28 HLTV MVP awards, which is also a record.
And that’s not all. At the end of the year, HLTV released its traditional Top 20 players list. Of course, ZywOo was there, and he took first place for the fourth time in his career. Another record. This was also his seventh Top 20 appearance in seven years, which is an impressive achievement on its own, even if not a record.
Overall, 2025 was a very positive year for Counter-Strike 2:
- CS2 remains the top shooter, staying just as popular as giants like Call of Duty or the new Battlefield;
- the skin market grew and recovered in just a few weeks after a massive crash;
