New weapon reload rules in CS2: what changed?

The main feature of this CS2 update is the reload system. Before, you could reload a magazine with 29 bullets left, and those bullets would go back into your total ammo pool. Now, you get 2 to 4 spare magazines per round, and they are used the same way no matter how many bullets were left before reloading.
As a result, some weapons now have different total ammo per round, which affects balance. For example, the MP9 only has 2 magazines, while the MP7 has 3 per round. Considering the price difference between these SMGs is just $150, more players will likely start choosing the MP7.
It’s worth noting that this is the first time Valve has seriously changed the reload mechanics. According to dust2us editor-in-chief, the ammo system was directly ported from Half-Life back in 1998 and stayed unchanged until yesterday.
How many reloads/magazines each CS2 weapon has after the update?

Most weapons have 2 to 4 spare magazines. The exception is three shotguns (XM1017, Nova, and Sawed-Off). Since they reload shell-by-shell, each gets 32 bullets.
Even though the SSG-08 lost the most ammo (from 100 down to 30), it’s not really a huge nerf — getting 30 shots in one round is still more than enough.
The biggest nerfs are to the AWP and M4A1-S. The main sniper rifle now only has 2 spare magazines, meaning 15 shots per round. (And if you reload badly, you could waste ammo in just 7 clicks.) The M4A1-S lost one magazine, and while 80 bullets per round sounds fine, fewer players will want to waste ammo shooting through smoke.
We should also mention the USP-S now has only two magazines. On pistol rounds, players used to reload a lot, but now accuracy matters much more. Also, be careful after shooting through the Mirage vent — every bullet counts.
If the USP-S got nerfed, the P2000 is the winner of the patch. With four spare magazines, it’s back in the game and we’ll likely see it more often.
Community reacts to the CS2 magazine reload update
Saying the community is shocked would be an understatement. Opinions are split. For example, James Banks said he liked the update.
At the same time, many players didn’t like it. Some compared it to extraction and survival shooters. Thour pointed out that the update post received a huge number of dislikes.
Now let’s look at pro players. Donk was happy about the AWP nerf again: “I don’t know how it will feel yet since we haven’t played. In some situations it might be uncomfortable — you expect multiple enemies, but can’t reload often. But I like that AWP is getting nerfed!”
m0NESY was not happy: “Another AWP nerf, just remove it from the game already))”
Legendary sniper KennyS shared his thoughts: “I gotta stop reloading my AWP after shooting once, I also gotta stop whiffing.”
An interesting idea came from several players: they want magazines not to disappear after reloading, but to return to the pool so you can use them later.
It’s a cool idea, but will the developers add it? That’s still unknown.
How did the CS2 update with reloads and mags affect skin prices?

Even though the first-day reaction doesn’t define a long-term trend, so far P2000 and M4A4 skins have gained value, while M4A1-S and AWP skins dropped slightly. We’ll keep watching how things develop.
Grenade guides are allowed in competitive matches

Another interesting feature in CS2 is the ability to use grenade guides in competitive matches. This helps new players learn basic utility on maps from the competitive pool. The developers even added official guides for all seven maps with simple smokes.
Valve limited guides to the first five rounds of each half. So they’re great for remembering basics, but not for fully learning lineups — practice mode is still better for that.
How to enable grenade guides in CS2?

To enable a guide during a competitive match, do the following:
- Press Esc and open the pause menu
- Find the guide option to the left of the “Resume Game” button
- Choose a guide (official from Valve or a workshop guide)
- Resume the game
Remember, guides only work for the first five rounds of each half.
Playing workshop maps with friends is now easier
Finally, Valve made playing custom modes more accessible. Before, you had to create a lobby to play workshop maps together. Now (if the server allows it), you can just join directly from your friends list. This is much easier if you want to surf or practice aim with a friend. By the way, we’ve previously made lists of the most interesting workshop maps:
