Not long ago, information appeared online claiming that in October 2025, players opened a record number of CS2 cases. The CS.MONEY Blog decided to find out if that’s really true.

If you don’t want to test your luck opening cases and would rather get a cool skin for a low price, check out our website. Tons of skins at great prices are waiting for you!
What is the record for case openings?
The biggest CS2 case-opening month so far was April 2023, with around 50,000,000 cases opened. In October 2025, the early estimate reached 70,000,000, but there is one big catch.
How are CS2 case openings counted?

Only Valve has full access to the data, so the community relies on indirect indicators. One of the most popular sources is the CS2 Case Tracker website. That’s where the number of almost 71 million came from. However, even the site’s creators ask players not to take that number as fact.
The CS2 Case Tracker team estimates the number of opened cases through Covert (aka red) Battle-Scarred skins. They calculate how many new red skins appeared, then divide that number by the chance of getting a red skin of that exact quality from a case.
After Valve allowed Covert skins to be used in trade-ups, chaos broke out. It’s only natural that many players started trading up lower-tier skins to get cheap red skins and, eventually, cheap knives. The website warns that the number might be “heavily inaccurate” because of the huge number of trade-ups. So it’s better to treat the 70 million figure with a huge chunk of salt, as the real number is probably much smaller.

Let’s take the Gamma 2 Case as an example. This case was added to the game back in 2016 and hasn’t been part of the active drop pool for quite a while. According to CS2 Case Tracker, about 170,000 of them were opened in September, and in October that number jumped to 910,000!
But if we look at the Steam Market, there are only around 20,000 of these cases listed for sale. The math doesn’t really add up. Since the case can drop M9 Bayonet and Karambit Doppler, it makes sense to assume that after the update, there were more trade-ups than actual case openings.
How much did Valve earn from cases?

Since we don’t know the exact number of opened cases, it’s impossible to give a precise amount. But let’s do some math: one key costs $2.50, plus Valve takes a solid cut from every case sold on the Steam Market. That means if players opened 40 million cases, Valve would make around $100 million. Not bad for a single month, right? Then again, we know Valve thinks in billions.
How many cases will be opened in November?
Nobody knows the answer. We can assume the number will still be high, as players always hope to score good trade-ups and cheap knives, especially during the turbulence. But here’s a tip: if you want to see an AWP Printstream or a Karambit Doppler in your inventory, don’t open cases. Head over to CS.MONEY and grab the skins you want!
