How the MP7 Buff Changes the CS2 Weapon Meta

At the end of January, the developers of Counter-Strike 2 launched the fourth competitive season and released a balance patch. At first glance, the changes looked small, but they might seriously shake up the CS2 meta very soon. What exactly changed, what kind of buff did the MP7 get, and how did the community react? The CS.MONEY Blog invites you to investigate.

cs2 meta: mp7 damage before and after update

Let’s start with the patch itself, released on January 22, 2026. With this update, the developers improved several weapons in the game:

  • Minor changes to MP7 and MP5-SD:
    • Slightly increased damage;
    • Slightly reduced damage drop-off over distance;
    • Price reduced by $100.
  • The PP-Bizon price was also reduced by $100.

The developers described the changes in a rather vague way, except for the clear discount. Luckily, SlothSquadron (a well-known weapons expert in the community) quickly found the exact numbers. In short, both SMGs received +1 damage per bullet and a 2 percentage point reduction to distance damage penalty.

It may not look impressive, but in practice that extra 1 damage and the $100 discount can seriously change the CS2 meta. To understand how important this is, we need to look at the bigger picture.

Let’s start with the obvious. The Bizon discount did not change its position in the CS2 weapon rankings at all. It is still objectively the worst SMG in the game. In almost every stat, it falls behind the top options in its class.

This creates a swamp of mediocrity that even its huge magazine and unique design cannot fix. The price reduction does nothing to improve its power or importance in the meta. That’s it for the PP-Bizon buff — the discount did not change anything.

The situation with the MP7 is completely different. All the small buffs together gave the weapon a noticeable boost.

The key point is that the MP7 has always been a niche weapon. That niche is tricky: below it are the cheapest SMGs and the Desert Eagle, and above it are the FAMAS and Galil AR, the budget rifles for CT and T sides. Because of this awkward position, many players ignored the MP7. Now, that niche has become wider.

First, the damage buff may seem small, but it is actually huge. The MP7 is now even better at both close and mid range, especially when it comes to headshots. Two accurate head taps can send an enemy back to spawn even from 35 meters or more. In practice, that’s the distance across the entire B site on Dust 2. The MP9 or MAC-10 can’t even dream of that kind of power.

Second, the price drop to $1400 does more than just make the weapon cheaper. For the CT side, saving $100 means you can buy armor and an SMG much more often after losing the pistol round. Now this is possible even without getting any kills as a team, as long as you bought armor in the first round. This is just one example of how the weapon became more accessible.

Experts at Scope.gg conducted a study and found practical evidence. After the update, players really did start buying the MP7 more often. Mostly, the submachine gun became a noticeable alternative to the MP9. Comparing the stats shows that about 15% of players now prefer the MP7:

At the same time, the MP7 is not an automatic choice whenever you can’t afford an AWP or M4. However, one of the best players in the world, Danil “donk” Kryshkovets, has called the MP7 a very strong weapon and even a hidden meta pick. Let’s talk about how to use it properly.

CS2 Meta: mp9 vs mp7

To understand how to play the MP7 correctly, we need to look at its strengths and weaknesses among SMGs.

ProsCons
High potential at close and mid range thanks to good accuracy;Average accuracy while moving;
Decent damage at range;Relatively low fire rate;
The lowest mobility among SMGs.

When you combine all the pros and cons, the role of the MP7 becomes clear. It is great against eco or force-buy rounds, and it can also fight fully equipped opponents at mid range.

In close fights, the MP7 loses to the MP9. The MP9 has a much higher fire rate, better movement speed, and stronger fast peek potential. At long range, the MP7 gives way to the SSG 08 or even the Desert Eagle. But in the 10–20 meter range, the weapon truly shines. That is the best way to use the new MP7 in CS2.

The MP7 recoil pattern looks like an upside-down seven. The first ten bullets go up and to the right, like the leg of a seven. After that, the weapon starts moving left and right.

So how should you shoot to control the spray? The best option is short bursts of 5–8 bullets. This makes the recoil easy to control, and most of your shots will hit the enemy even at mid range.

The short answer is the second round of the half. The MP7 is a classic farm gun. It is weaker than rifles, but it gives double money per kill. One big advantage is that after winning the second round, you can keep the MP7 for the third instead of throwing it away at spawn.

It is also worth considering during force-buy rounds. After the price reduction and damage increase, the MP7 filled the gap between the Desert Eagle and the Galil AR for mid-range fights. On the CT side, it is now a solid competitor to the FAMAS. In fact, after the buff, it might be the FAMAS that has to fight for its place in the meta.

There are already 38 skins available for the MP7, and interestingly, only one of them has Covert rarity. Some skins are simple and camouflaged, while others are bright and eye-catching. The CS.MONEY Blog has made a shortlist of the best MP7 skins:

  • Bloodsport — one of the most recognizable red skins in the game. Red background, white and gold accents, symbols and patterns. It looks more like a racing car than a weapon.
  • Coral Paisley — a skin from a newer collection with coral and orange tones. Its look also depends on the pattern. The best part is the price: you can find it in Minimal Wear condition for less than a dollar.
  • Fade — a true legend and a style icon. In CS2, gradient skins look even better thanks to improved lighting. The MP7 Fade now literally shines.
  • Smoking Kills — this skin has a fun feature. With every shot, the cigarette on the design lights up from the muzzle flash. It gives new meaning to the name.
  • Motherboard — perfect for players who love green inventories. The weapon is covered in green PCB texture, the same material used in computer and phone motherboards, with printed circuit lines on top. It looks cool and costs almost nothing.

You can buy these and other MP7 skins on CS.MONEY. They are available in both the Trade and the Market modes. You can also find other CS2 items there, from agents and gloves to charms and stickers. Don’t wait, and upgrade your inventory today!
