Counter-Strike 2 has many subtle mechanics — air strafing, the “warm-up” inaccuracy during shooting, or wallbangs. Today, the CS.MONEY Blog explains wallbanging: why it’s needed and how it works.

How do wallbangs work?
A wallbang is the act of dealing damage through an obstacle — a wall, floor, ceiling, or other cover. All weapons in CS2 can deal damage this way, but they have varying effectiveness. This is determined by a weapon-specific parameter called “Penetration Power.”
In CS2, weapons have three levels of penetration power:
- 100% – All submachine guns, shotguns, and pistols (except the Desert Eagle and Revolver).
- 200% – All automatic rifles, machine guns, the Desert Eagle, and the Revolver.
- 250% – All sniper rifles.
The higher this value, the more effectively the weapon penetrates barriers. For example, the AWP can shoot clean through a wall on the Banana area of Inferno, whereas the TEC-9 will only leave small holes in the plaster.
Aside from the weapon’s stats, two other factors influence the success of a wallbang:
- Barrier thickness. The thicker the wall, the more damage reduction occurs. If the damage reduction reaches zero, the shot won’t penetrate the barrier.
- Material type. Thin and fragile materials, like drywall sheets, can be penetrated easily by pistols, dealing almost full damage. Steel beams, however, won’t be penetrated, even by a sniper rifle, or will inflict negligible damage.
To summarize, a wallbang is the act of dealing damage through a barrier. The thicker and more durable the obstacle, the greater the damage reduction. The more powerful the weapon, the easier it is to penetrate barriers.
How to enable bullet hitboxes in CS2?
В изучении прострелов хорошо помогают две консольные команды. Вот они:
- Sv_showimpacts 1 – Displays bullet hits registered by the game.
- Sv_showimpacts_penetration 1 – Shows additional information about the shot, such as damage dealt, wallbang trajectory, the distance traveled through the obstacle, and more.
Both commands are protected by sv_cheats, so they can only be used in training mode. These commands are very useful for discovering new wallbang spots or practicing existing ones.

Why are wallbangs important?
The answer is simple — to deal damage to enemies. Every map in CS2 has spots where you can wallbang to deal “free” damage. Examples include the Hut on Nuke, Apartments on Inferno, Kitchen on Mirage, and many other locations.
When using wallbangs, you must keep a few risks in mind:
- Wallbangs work both ways. The barrier you’re shooting through can also be penetrated by your opponent’s bullets from the other side.
- Shooting reveals your position. Any firing gives away where you are to the enemy.
- Ammo consumption. For some weapons, running out of ammunition due to excessive wallbanging can become a serious problem.
Wallbangs are not something to rely solely on, but they might make the difference in a couple of rounds. So it is worth to learn them.
