How to Play KZ? Tutorial: Basics and Tips
Just like CS:GO Surf, KZ fully utilizes Source engine’s features. With the right combination of commands, you can move faster and jump farther. Basically, KZ is about moving around the map and climbing upwards.
In this mode, maps resemble large mountains you need to conquer. You have various platforms to help you progress by jumping between them. KZ maps are usually more demanding in terms of skill than Surf maps, but the emotional reward for overcoming difficult obstacles is much greater, right?
Best way to play KZ mode and enjoy what you are doing is to have stable 120 frames per second: gaming computers can easily handle this, but older laptops or macOS computers may struggle.
Additionally, in KZ proper binds are of great importance. Since KZ is about precise coordination and a massive amount of jumps, most regular players in this mode bind the jump action to their mouse scroll wheels. To do this, you need to enter the following commands in the game console:
- bind mwheelup +jump
or
- bind mwheeldown +jump
You need this because during jumps you will require high coordination between your mouse movements and keyboard button presses, and using a mouse wheel makes it more convenient.
Now that you are prepared to play, it’s time to join the server. After connecting to a KZ server, you will see various platforms, and by progressing through them, you will reach new locations. However, it only sounds simple: in reality, you must utilize different mechanics, which we will discuss below.
Pre-strafe
This is a preparatory technique that allows you to gain speed before jumping. Hold down W (move forward) and, for example, D (move left) while smoothly adjusting your crosshair to the right (while pressing A, move your crosshair to the left). If done correctly, your speed will exceed the classic 250 units per second, and this difference can affect the distance of the jump.
Air-strafe
Another basic technique essential to know how to play KZ properly. While in air, release W, hold down A or D, and smoothly move your crosshair to where you want your strafe. This provides additional speed and, as a result, extra distance.
Long jumps
Basically, you have to jump at a really long distances in KZ to surpass the usual limit with strafing techniques. During a single jump, you can switch your strafes to different directions to maintain the jump’s direction, but this requires high actions synchronization. In fact, this quality largely distinguishes good KZ players.
For example, you can find details about these three techniques in this video guide.
Bunnyhopping
This technique allows you to significantly increase movement speed and jump distance by perfect timing. Source Engine doesn’t immediately stop the player model after you stop pressing the movement button; according to the force of friction, the speed gradually decreases. At the end of a jump, there is a short period during which the force of friction does not affect the player. You can significantly increase your speed if you time the next jump during this tiny period.
When you start learning bunnyhopping, the most important thing is to find your own rhythm. Later, you will learn more advanced techniques, essentially combinations of these basics.
How to find KZ servers in CS:GO?
Since KreedZ mode is not official, you’ll need to put in some effort to find the best server for KZ. Fortunately, the effort required is minimal. There are two easy ways to find KZ servers. First, use the in-game community server browser. Type “KZ” in the Search Bar, and you’ll get a list of KZ servers for CS:GO. It’s super easy!
Second, use third-party platforms. They’re legal and work well. For example, xplay.gg/mode/kz, which has a dedicated section for KZ servers; you can be sure they are prepared and optimized for a pleasant gaming experience.
Best KZ Maps For Beginners
Often (but not always), the difficulty of maps directly depends on their length. Therefore, it’s better to start with something short. Our selection of the best KZ maps for beginners:
- kz_beginnerblock_go – The name speaks for itself. An excellent map to start learning the basics.
- kz_cellblock_go2 – A map with an infernal setting, but very well made.
- bkz_hellokitty_v2 – A cute, short, and relatively easy map focusing on bunny hops. There’s also a special room where you can practice long jumps.
How to Improve at KZ? Tips and Tricks
Our best advice for beginners of KZ, surprisingly, is simple: play, play, and play some more. CS:GO offers a vast number of techniques and mechanics that, when combined, can lead to the decent results. Can’t make it with a simple long jump? Maybe a combo with bunnyhops would work!
Sometimes, especially on older maps, pixel surfing can help. It’s a bug where you literally walk on a wall even though there’s no ground beneath you. To do this, when the ground ends, release W and start strafing towards the wall (if the wall is on the left, hold A; if it’s on the right, hold D). Your crosshair should face slightly away from the wall so you can move forward and towards the wall if you want to move backward movement.
Here’s a list of the most popular maps in KZ. Each one is clickable and will take you to Steam Workshop, where you can add it to your collection:
