When To Run With Knife In CS2?

In Counter-Strike 2, movespeed depends on the weapon you’re wielding. The fastest way to run in CS2 is obviously with a knife, which can be used to gain advantage. But careless knife handling in CS2, just like in real life, can lead to problems. CS.MONEY Blog tells you when you can run with a knife, and when it’s best to hold weapons instead of it.

Running with a Knife in CS2

Distances in CS2 are not only measured in metres, but also in units. Each unit is 1 inch of distance or about 2.5 centimetres. Running speed is also measured in these. The fastest you can run with a knife is 250 units per second, or just under 6.5 metres in a normal measurement system. For context, running speed with a Deagle is 230 units per second but with an AK-47 it’s only 215. That’s a big difference, even though these numbers might not tell.

When You DO Use Knife To Run in CS2

So, we now know that running with a knife is the fastest. Does that mean you should switch to knife anytime you press W? No. There are three common scenarios where switching to a knife is completely justified. These are:

  • Getting into position at the start of a round;
  • Moving from point to point;
  • Jumping.

Let’s look at each scenario. Surely, leave the spawn and run to your position with a knife in hand. Even if it’s a short run from T base to Box on Dust 2, these fractions of a second gained can be crucial on first contact. Always use your knife at the start of a round to get into position as quickly as possible.

Another scenario is travelling between plants. On most maps this will require travelling a considerable distance. Switching to a knife can buy you 2-3 seconds or even more! Although this seems like nothing, don’t be fooled. A few seconds won very often turn into rounds won.

The last scenario is when jumping and run boosting. The speed of jumping depends on the speed of running, so all acrobatic techniques must be performed with a knife in hand. The only exception is jumping to get onto something, as the height of the jump does not depend on the chosen weapon.

When You DON’T Use Knife To Run in CS2

Speed is a serious advantage, but holding a knife has a serious disadvantage: you can’t really fight with anyone. Switching from knife to firearm takes a second or more. At that point, you are completely defenceless. Therefore, you should gold a knife if there is a risk of a collision with an opponent. Sounds vague, so here’s a little list with an example of situations where you should think twice before pulling out a knife:

  • When moving around the map if there is no information about enemies
  • When peeking from around a corner
  • During a clutch
  • When changing position during a firefight

These situations are examples where using a knife while moving involves additional risks. You can still switch to it, but you need to remember to weigh the pros and cons.

Now, let’s sum up. In Counter-Strike 2, the speed of movement depends on the weapon held in hands. The fastest way to run is with a knife, and it can be used to gain advantage, but you need to be very careful because holding a knife makes it impossible to participate in a skirmish. There are three situations in which it always makes sense to have a knife in hand: when taking a position at the start of a round, when moving between plants, and when jumping. In all other situations, you should assess the risks of such a decision before switching to a knife.
