CS2 Bomb Mechanics: Blast Radius, Damage, and Safe Zones

The C4 bomb is the core gameplay element in every Counter-Strike game. The entire flow of each map revolves around bombsites and planting the bomb. Even though the mechanics seem simple, C4 has plenty of details that every player should know. In this guide, the CS.MONEY Blog explains everything you need to know about the bomb in Counter-Strike 2.

  • Defusing the bomb takes 10 seconds, or 5 seconds with a Defuse Kit.
  • Bomb timer: 40 seconds.
  • Planting the bomb takes about 3.5 seconds.
  • Armor reduces bomb damage by 50%.
  • You move at knife speed while holding the bomb. Knowing this can save valuable time because you don’t need to switch to your knife while rotating or running to a bombsite.
  • Audio settings include an option that plays music during the final 10 seconds before the explosion. Even some professional players use this feature.
  • Bomb damage depends entirely on your distance from the explosion, so it’s important to know the safe spots on every map.

Fun and useful tip: if you spray graffiti right before planting, you can use the graffiti cooldown to track the bomb timer almost perfectly. Graffiti has a cooldown of about 43 seconds, planting takes around 3 seconds, and the bomb timer lasts 40 seconds.

Most casual players rarely think about how the bomb explosion actually works or where they should hide. This guide will help you understand the mechanics.

The damage system is surprisingly hidden. The game never explains it directly, so the community figured everything out through testing.

Players discovered that both the damage radius and damage values vary greatly between maps. On Nuke, you have to run almost across the entire map to survive. On Anubis, you can safely watch the explosion while staying inside the bombsite. Literally. Surprisingly, walls don’t reduce bomb damage at all. Only the distance between you and the bomb matters. Keep that little secret to yourself.

There are two ways to do it: use console commands in a practice server or visit specialized websites.

The first method is to launch a practice lobby and enter these console commands:

  • sv_cheats 1
  • map_showbombradius
  • For extra convenience, you can also enable noclip.

The game will then display the bomb’s damage zones. While useful, flying around the map to inspect the spheres isn’t the most practical method.

The second option is less visual but much more accurate. The CSNades website lets you check the exact blast radius and damage values for every competitive map.

Simply choose a map, switch to Bomb Mode, and double-click the location where you want to plant the bomb.

After selecting the plant position, move your mouse across the red circles to see the exact distance and damage values. The site also calculates damage with and without armor.

  • Gray circle: radius in which at least one HP of damage occurs
  • Outer red circle: survival radius with full HP and full armor.
  • Inner red circle: guaranteed death regardless of armor.

By combining both methods, you can accurately learn the blast radius on every map and always know where it’s safe to hide.

Here are some basic survival tips for the main competitive maps. Most maps are straightforward: simply run as far away from the bomb as possible. However, on a vertical map like Nuke, inexperienced players often run downstairs, assuming walls and floors will protect them. Unfortunately, they won’t.

  • Dust2: If the bomb is planted on A, you should run at least to Mid or the CT Spawn exit toward B if you have armor. If the bomb is on B, Lower Tunnels and the Mid Doors area are generally safe.
  • Mirage: On B site, you’ll die if you stay in the site, Apartments, or Kitchen. If the bomb is on A, good escape routes include Window, the back of Palace, CT Spawn, and Mid.
  • Inferno: Never hide inside Church if the bomb is planted on B. Instead, run all the way toward CT Spawn or the Banana exit near T Spawn. On A, your best chance is to reach the Arches near CT Spawn.
  • Anubis: This map has one of the smallest bomb damage radii in the game. On both bombsites, simply leaving the site and moving toward Main is usually enough. On A site, if the bomb is planted in the far corner, you can actually survive while staying inside the site if you have full HP and armor.
  • Cache: Similar to Anubis. On both bombsites, running to Main is usually enough.
  • Ancient: This map features one of the largest blast radii. A safe option for both bombsites is running toward the middle of Mid.
  • Overpass: If the bomb is planted on A, run toward the wider part of Long or even all the way to the opposite bombsite. On B, you can survive inside Connector.

Nuke is one of the most complex maps because of its vertical layout and massive blast radius. The basic rule is simple: run as far away as possible. The only truly safe places are the team spawns and the areas behind them.

If you don’t have enough time, avoid staying inside the main building. That almost always guarantees death.

If the bomb is planted on the upper site, you can survive by reaching the far end of Ramp or Secret. Without armor, Ramp isn’t safe. With armor, you’ll usually lose around 50-60 HP depending on the bomb’s exact position. Secret is a much safer option. If you have armor, you don’t necessarily need to reach the deepest part of Secret, although every extra step helps.

Important: you will die here if you don’t have armor

If the bomb is planted on the lower site, your best options are running Outside or staying on the stairs at the far end of Secret. Again, armor makes a huge difference. Without it, you’ll usually die.

We say “usually” because every 100 game units can matter, and the exact planting position may slightly increase or reduce the damage, especially on a large site like Nuke B.

Here are the most important things to remember in Counter-Strike:

  • Planting the bomb takes 3.5 seconds.
  • Defusing takes 5 seconds with a Defuse Kit or 10 seconds without one.
  • Running with the bomb is just as fast as running with a knife.
  • Learn the safe positions on every map, and remember that armor cuts bomb damage in half.

Remember, C4 has different damage and explosion radius on different maps. If you want to be 100% sure, don’t hesitate to spend some time and try different things out.
