Grenades always played an essential role in the Counter-Strike.
Catching your opponent off guard to increase your chances in a fight is one of the major game regulations. Players spend many hours finding and learning the most effective grenade trajectories.
The Incendiary Grenade (or Molotov) was first introduced with the CS:GO release. At first professional players were mostly against the new grenade and asked Valve to reconsider this decision. Ten years later, Molotov is well-studied, and people are not afraid of it.
You should not be afraid of it either, since CS.MONEY Blog prepared a special article where we will tell you everything you need to know about cs go Molotov.
Basic Characteristics
Let’s start with one crucial nuance. In attack and defence, you buy different incendiaries. While on T-side, you can buy the classic Molotov cocktail, simply a glass bottle with flammable liquid. At the same time, the defence has special red grenades. They also cost differentдн: Molotov is $400, and the incendiary grenade will cost you $600. However, other characteristics of these grenades are the same. Everything we mention in the text below applies to both types.
A successful throw leads to a burst of flames around the explosion epicentre. Players caught in fire begin to take damage over time, and the visibility is slightly obstructed (however, not as strong as with smoke grenades).
With the introduction of Molotovs, CS developers solved the camper problem. If someone sneaks from an annoying position, you can throw a grenade there, and they will be forced to leave their spots. Another great use of incendiaries is blocking the map’s narrow path. Like Gandalf, you won’t allow your opponents to pass for seven seconds. For example, suppose you have already planted the bomb. In that case, the CT will have a terrible time deciding to wait until the end of Molotov or to waste time moving around it. Either way, they will lose precious time.
Advanced Mechanics
Molotov is thrown like any other grenade. However, here’s a couple of important points. In csgo Molotov can bounce off the walls and ceilings but will explode when it touches the walkable textures. You can’t throw them far either: after flying for more than two seconds, they will explode mid-air with zero damage. So, you can’t throw them from one side of the map to another. Instead, players use it in relatively close combat.

After a grenade successfully explodes on the ground, there will be an almost perfect circle of flames around the explosion spot. Still, later the fire will spread towards one of the sides. The direction is random; however, more often than not, it is similar to the original throwing direction.
It is also important to remember that flame hitboxes have height. That’s why climbing another step in the Dust2 tunnel might not be enough.
Also, know that the game settings can affect the visibility near Molotov. If you have effects and shaders set on high, the smoke will be intense near the explosion but much more transparent further. On the low settings, everything is vice versa. Keep that in mind.
Damage Tips
Contrary to HE grenades that deal significant damage in one instance, Molotov deals damage over time. Spending more time in the fire will cause receiving more damage.
Incendiaries deal damage five times per second. In the first tick, you will get one damage, but with every consecutive tick, the damage will increase. It’s eight damage per tick max, which is forty damage per second. Armour or helmet does not lower it. Crouching, running or moving the camera won’t help, as the damage is similar for every pose.
Also, a direct hit will cost you one or two hit points depending on the body part affected.
How To Evade Molotov Fire
Rule number one: don’t panic. Rule number two: if you have Molotov exploded near you, you have three options.
Option one: run away. You will receive only minor damage if you react immediately and run away from the fire circle. Ten or fifteen HP is a low price. However, while you are running away, opponents might catch you.
Option two: extinguish it. You need a smoke grenade to do that. It will be extinguished if you throw smoke in the circle of flames. The only requirement is that the smoke covers at least one-third of the burning ground. The downside of this option is obvious: you waste your smoke grenade and will have fewer resources for the round.
Option three: complete your task while burning to death. Sometimes you need literally a second to defuse the bomb successfully. Or you need to hit one more bullet to kill an opponent. You can try finishing your task while burning, but that’s a tactic you should apply last if there are no other ways. There would be tens of silly deaths on every successful fire defuse (cheers, Olofmeister!). Choose this option only in desperate situations.
Knowing the game basics is essential if you want to excel. Learn it so you won’t have to panic. GL HF!
