Concept Art: IRL-Inspired Skins & Their References

There are lots of great designs in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and many of them are products of great creativity. But sometimes, skin creators want to show respect and pay tributes to different inspiring things from real life. CS.MONEY Blog unfolds a couple of stories behind famous weapon finishes.

SG 553 Integrale and Dual Berettas Twin Turbo

SG 553 Integrale
Dual Berettas Twin Turbo

Both of these weapon finishes were added to the game with the 2018 Inferno Collection. Obviously, the creators were inspired by rally racing: both skins refer to the iconic Lancia cars, which dominated rally motorsports in the 1970-s and 1980-s. SG-553 finish is a tribute to Lancia Delta Integrale…

… while Dual Berettas represent Lancia Stratos HF:

They both have recognizable livery design, so people can guess the sponsors.

FAMAS ZX Spectron

FAMAS ZX Spectron

This FAMAS was made in memoriam to Sir Clive Sinclair, a British entrepreneur and the developer of the iconic ZX Spectrum. This skin’s design refers to the computer, which played a massive role in the gaming industry’s development. You can see the slightly changed surname SINCLEIR on it to leave no other explanation.

Sir Clive Sinclair passed away on September 16, 2021. FAMAS | ZX Spectre appeared in CS:GO five days later. As the description says: “Clive would be proud“.

Negev dev_texture

More on computers, gaming, and programming, although a bit of an inside joke. Emkay reminds everyone of the iconic aim_texture map with their Negev weapon finish. Originally aim_texture and now the Negev have these developer-made textures from the Source engine. Cheeky reference.

Sawed-Off Yorick

Sawed-Off Yorick

“Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy….”

This weapon finish was clearly inspired by the famous “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare. Yorick is a dead jester whose skull was exhumed in act 5. The sight of Yorick’s skull evokes a reminiscence by Prince Hamlet. Even CS:GO has a reference to the world famous dramaturge.

MP9 Mount Fuji

MP9 Mount Fuji

Just like the previous gun, this SMG’s design is pretty straightforward. Mount Fuji plays a massive role in Japanese culture. A lot of artworks were devoted to it, so it is unsurprising that Mount Fuji received its own reference in CS:GO.

Fun fact: Virtus.pro player n0rb3r7 added a name tag “ARARAT” on this gun. You can read about this and other noticeable professional players’ name tags in our article.

XM1014 Ziggy

XM1014 Ziggy

“Ziggy played guitar

Jamming good with Weird and Gilly

And the Spiders from Mars”

The Honey Badger, the creator of this weapon finish, was greatly inspired by the legendary David Bowie album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”. The Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 35 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Interestingly, while Ziggy Stardust inspired such a pattern, the color scheme was inspired by… Joker. The Honey Badger decided to add chaos and anarchy to their pattern while noticing that famous purple color was not represented in other XM1014 finishes.

Glock-18 Vogue

Glock-18 Vogue

Let’s move on to the fashion world. Did you know that “Vogue” means “style” in French? The Vogue magazine will celebrate its 130th birthday this December, and it undoubtedly influenced our world in great matter.

The pop-art eyes might be a reference to the May 1961 magazine cover: back then, it was Sophia Loren’s legendary photo, yet, only her eyes and lips were imaged.

Style is essential in today’s life, and the creators of this Glock understand that clearly.
