When Valve releases updates for its games, data miners celebrate: the game code can contain interesting discoveries related to other titles. However, today the CS.MONEY Blog is talking about a find that directly concerns CS2, as we may be getting a new sniper rifle in the near future!

Information about a new weapon called the M14 has appeared in the weapon.vdata file. The M14 is a sniper rifle that was produced from 1957 to 1980. It is a semi-automatic rifle that was manufactured both for infantry use and in sniper variants. Judging by the game file, it looks like it could become a new sniper rifle in CS2.

Let’s make one thing clear right away: this information should be taken with a grain of salt, as the developers can still change a lot of things. Based on the current version, however, one Reddit user analyzed the numbers. Here’s what we have so far.

The sniper rifle is expected to cost $4,100, making it cheaper than the AWP. Players will have 10 bullets per round: five loaded into the weapon and five additional rounds that need to be inserted into the rifle, similar to how the Nova and Sawed-Off shotguns are reloaded.

The rifle has a higher movement speed than AWP while scoped in. It also provides a wider field of view compared to the AWP. The damage between these two is comparable. Both sniper rifles are very lethal. At relatively short distances (up to 1,000 units), a single hit will be enough for a kill. At distances between 1,000 and 3,000 units, players will need to aim in the torso. A single body shot should still be enough for a kill. At the same time, M14 will be less consistent, as its standing accuracy is lower than that of the AWP.

It seems that Valve wants to create an alternative to the AWP for aggressive snipers who like to take early picks. In its current version, the M14 costs less, meaning we could theoretically see it as early as the second or third round of a half. After all, the AWP and semi-automatic sniper rifles cost significantly more than the AK-47 or M4, leaving this economic gap largely unfilled.

During force buys, players will still go for the Scout. The AWP comes into play when the economy is great. The M14 could theoretically find its niche somewhere between these two extremes.

Of course, Valve can still change everything, but the very possibility of a new weapon is exciting. The developers aren’t just busy bringing old CS content to CS2, they are also working on something genuinely new.
